15th Century Sculptured Stone Face

A stylised sculptured stone face that would probably date to the English late medieval period. Possibly a supporting corbel or window stop. A decorative embellishment from a medieval period English church. The carved stone images that decorated our churches throughout the middle ages all offered a different cast of characters from the grotesque to those in biblical history. All were placed high on church walls, their purpose was not just decorative but also to "lead the faithful towards contemplation of God".

The facial features of this piece are not unlike those found on celtic heads in the Yorkshire region (which this example originates from) although i believe this sculpture to be of a later period which still mirrored the earlier simplistic style. The stone sculpture is 'life size' with wonderful, uncomplicated detail and is in superb order as can be seen from the images provided. The stone carved sculpture is beautifully presented on a 'museum quality' display stand and is a fabulous example of its type!
