Circa 1900 African Tribal Ceremonial Axe

A superb African Tribal Ceremonial axe/hatchet. Possibly Yoruba Tribe of South Western Nigeria, who are historically famous for their artistic skills in producing stylised African artefacts/ objects. This example displays a fine carved figural bone shaft with forged iron axe head. The shaft bound in three positions with twisted copper wire (telegraph signalling wire).
The whole having aged and darkened, acquiring a marvelous oxblood (possibly stained) patina. Fantastic piece on superb custom stand!
