Shepherdess With Her Sheep
Dated:
Circa 1800
History:
A charming oval silk-work scene depicting a shepherdess with her sheep. In its original gilded gesso frame, with black and gilt reverse painted glass surround. The embroidery is worked in silk onto a silk background in which the sky and features of the shepherdess have been painted with watercolours.
This is quite possibly a scene that was taken from Jean Francois Marmontel's play "La Bergere Des Alpes" (The Shepherdess of the Alps). This play inspired the creation of similar variants of silk needleworks from that time, which are now becoming difficult to find.
Showing some signs of time acquired period distress, but which does not detract in any way from this fine example of a Georgian folk-art silk work.
